ETHEL THE FROG - Ethel The Frog (1980) UK

In Everyone's lifetime, there is a handful of albums that truly stand out in your memory. For me, one of them is definitely the talented band, ETHEL THE FROG, who's music is one of a kind.
In 1977, Hailing from Hull, England, Doug Sheppard, Paul Conyers,
Paul Tognola & Terry Hopkinson, formed the band called ETHEL THE FROG.
Within a year, they released 1000 copies of an independent single of their version of the Beatle's classic, "Eleanor Rigby", with the song, "Whatever Happened To Love" being on the flipside.
After creating a reputation touring all over England, they were offered a chance to record a song for the now infamous "Metal For Muthas", which was a project devised by EMI to showcase new and unsigned acts.
The LP, now a cult classic, is revered as one of the first and greatest compilations of all time.
"Fight Back" was their national debut, thanks to the high record sales of "Metal For Muthas".
Liking the sound of ETHEL THE FROG, EMI offered them the chance to record an album, which resulted in their self-titled debut of "Ethel The Frog".
The debut of ETHEL THE FROG produced a classic album of the era, walking the fine line between rock and metal. Unfortunately, the band broke up shortly after the album's release, thus ending a very promising venture.
To keep the band, ETHEL THE FROG in the public eye, EMI released "Eleanor Rigby" as a single with "Fight Back" on the B-Side.
Now, thanks to British Steel, this classic album is available on Cd.

BLAZER BLAZER - Cecil B. Devine EP (1979) UK

LOGO RECORDS
Birmingham's BLAZER BLAZER (and they'll live to regret that) are probably every mirror star's idea of a dream band.
*Strut, pose, and flash; hit low, hard (very hard) and don't stop trying till they're up an' dancing. They breathe more fire and thunder than a pack of basilisks, but tap the hulk of the beast
and the hollow clang can be heard a mile off.

Whizzz! Screeech! Ka-ching! A guitar solo. Blazing fretboards rarely entertain, and Derek O'Neil's is no exception. Wham! Blam! Kerthump! A bass solo. Steve Barnacle is a beefy chap,
so rudeness on the part of the reviewer could prove fatal. Simon Fox (whose last gig was with Be Bop Deluxe, fax fanz) refrains from a complete solo. Almost but not quite; perhaps drum
solos are officially passe at long last. The omission is gratefully noted.
"Here's sum rock an' roll," says Jeb Million, a vocalist in the clenched-throat Sammy Hagar tradition, and announces 'Six O'clock In The Morning'. Sounds nothing like rock and roll to me,
but then songs classified thus rarely do.
"We're gonna slow things down a bit right now," he says, as predictably as a British Leyland assembly worker, and the song is 'Stage Door Johnny'. Jeb adds some keyboard texture, the
song is restrained, a tastefully handled ballad with delicate lyrics, and for the first (and last time I can take my fingers out of my ears.
They soon go back, resistance to extreme volume not being one of their strong points. 'Call Me A Doctor', 'Danger Zone', 'Ladies And Gents' da, da, da, da: humdrum-hard-rock hum-bug.
Time to go home? Not quite. The encore take's ten seconds to materialise, and reveals itself as nothing more than 'Johnny B. Goode'. Was it a 'rousing version of the old standard'?
Several people danced; presumably they were 'roused'.
I walked quickly home and tried to stop my ears ringing.

AGONY BAG - Rabies Is A Killer 7" (1980) UK

MONZA RECORDS
Agony Bag was a band from Leicester in the UK which was formed by two members of Black Widow, who took that band's theatrical presentation a few steps further.

Agony Bag released one single during their career which was "Rabies is a Killer" backed with "Never Never Land". The record was released on 7th March 1980 on the Monza Records Label, catalogue number MON 002.
Due mainly to Clive and Bok's Black Widow connection, this much sought after record is now fetching up to £30.00 in mint condition.
As a footnote, it is interesting to find that this record has been picked up by an Italian band, Death SS, who use "Rabies..." in their live act and have also recorded it on one of their albums. In 2000 there was a re-awakening of interest in Agony Bag when Clive Jones got in touch with Black Widow Records in Italy, who had named their company after Clive and Bok's original band.
This resulted in the release of an album in mid 2001 called "Feelmazumba", on the (an excellent italian label) Black Widow Records.
The album (Feelmazumba)consisted of the single, material recorded by the original band but never released, and some of Clive's songs which were recorded later by himself, with other musicians.

ARAGORN - Black Ice 7" (1981) UK

NEAT RECORDS
This "Black Ice" single is the only release by Cheshire's ARAGORN, not to be confused with various outfits who called themselves ARAGORN, were one of Neat's earliest signigns in the NWOBHM era, although they were unfortunate enough to be struck by personnel problems soon afterwards, meaning that they were obliged to enlist the services of a guest bassist in order to get their first single released in the early months of 1981. The record is in a pretty basic, mid-tempo NWOBHM style, with similarities to both SACRED ALIEN and TRAXX.

A II Z - The Witch Of Berkeley (Live) (1980) UK

In due course, a well-attended local A II Z gig captured for posterity, and edited highlights were subsequently used to compile " The Witch Of Berkeley", the group's debut long-player. The version linked here is a CD version, Reissued in 2006 by Majestic Rock Records with five bonus tracks.

Staffordshire's quintet, formed in 1979, LE GRIFFE's debut release ('Fast bikes' EP) sold out of the first pressing of 2000 following a short British club tour in early 1983. Another EP ('You're Killing Me') followed later that year. Unfortunately LE GRIFFE split in 1984 after the release of their debut album 'Breaking Strain' with Kev Collier then joining ROGUE MALE.

KRAKEN - Fantasy Reality EP (1980) UK

KNAVE RECORDS
Not to be confused with either their later Canadian namesakes (who were, absurdly, featured on the "NWOBHM Demo Tape" bootleg CD) or the later Merseyside group who contributed tot the "It's Unheard Of!" compilation, the "genuine" NWOBHM version of KRAKEN are primarily known by virtue of their legendary three track EP from 1980. Mind you, the background is a bit perplexing, given that the trio supposedly evolved from a mainstream club act who were active in the North West at the tail end of the 70's. This is completely at odds with the observation that most of their touring activities in the early 80's were centred around the Midlands, so it looks as though their reinvention as a metal concern may have coincided with a relocation to a more southerly destination. Anyway, their one-off EP may have had the general appearance of a typical, no-frills private pressing, although it featured a selection of highly individualistic tracks, which came in the shape of "Fantasy Reality", "Deadmans Dreamland" and the grandiloquently-titled "Winged Bulls Of Ninevh".
Their highly-regarded EP, which was never issued in a picture sleeve, has been a mainstay of the collecting scene since its inception, and is still highly prized today.

HOGGS - See It Now 7" (1980) UK

NOW RECORDS
Ultra rare ultra obscure NWOBHM band who produced one insanely rare 7" then disappeared without trace.
The unremarkably-named HOGGS, a long-forgotten quintet from the fertile Glamorgan area, were, to be brutally honest, one of the less innovative acts to emerge from the South Wales rock scene, preferring to take their inspiration from a variety of familiar 70's heroes, notably LED ZEPPELIN.

"Seven Days Of Splendour" EP by Jameson Raid from back in 1979. The Brummie bruisers recorded a couple of highly regarded (and highly priced!) eps & a demo, before changing their name to The Raid in time for a "Metal For Muthas 2" appearance, which was to be their last hurrah. I don't think they ever bettered the first ep, presented here for your enjoyment, the title track in particular being a much compiled highlight of the whole "movement".

A Stockport based Rock act formed in 1978, debuting with the 1980 EP 'New Way Of Livin' on the Smile label. Myrrh Records published the eponymous debut album in 1981. During their time 100% PROOF was probably the leading White Hard Rock band in the country. Amongst their notable achievements came a headlining appearance at the Christian Greenbelt festival in 1983, promoting their sophomore 'Power And The Glory' album. Guitarist Charlie Wilson was also involved with the legendary amazing christian metal group FORCE 3.

JAMESON RAID - "Electric Sun" Demo (1982) UK

With only two EP's and a scarce demo to their name, JAMESON RAID, who had formed as early as 1977, are still one of the NWOBHM era's best remembered bands. Formed in Birmingham from the ashes of punk band Notre Dame, they should have, in a just world, gone on to bigger and better things. Their 1979 debut EP, "Seven Days Of Splendour"is laden with original, fast Heavy music. The title track being one of the best songs of the whole period!
The two further tracks are great too, the 6-minute long "Catcher In The Rye" convinces completely and almost justifies the abnormally high price which one must pay for this rare piece today.
If the single is complete, one finds a text sheet with an abstrusely fictitious story on the back.
In 1980 appeared the second EP, "The Hypnotist", a four track tour-de-force. JAMESON RAID offers again quality here, showing more variety and better production than on their debut. Again one must pay today three-figure euro amounts in order to be able to call this vinyl one's own.
The last vinyl sign of the band was on the "Metal For Muthas 2" compilation album, (EMI, 1980). The band were now going by the shortened name of THE RAID and disappointed with the relatively poor "Hard Lines", a sad epitaph to a great band.
An obscure demo called "Electric Sun" surfaced in 1982, but by then it was all over...

REQUIEM - Angel Of Sin 7" (1980) UK

SACRIFICIAL RECORDS
The Doom styled NWoBHM band REQUIEM was founded in Wolverhampton during 1979. The first version of the band comprised singer Mike Reid, ex-ARC guitarist Steve Slater, bassist Gordon Denny and drummer Kelvin Yates (a.k.a. 'Yatta'), previously of THE POSSESSED. The latter would soon be replaced by Karl Wilcox as the band set to rehearsing at the Holy Joe's Church school building, made famous due to its former occupants - JUDAS PRIEST. They would perform on the Midlands club circuit throughout the early 80s, supporting the likes of JAMESON RAID and BUDGIE.
A three track demo, recorded at M.R.S. studios in Walsall, preceded a 1980, self-financed 7" single 'Angel of Sin' / 'Sacrificial Wanderer'. Following this release Reid was replaced by TRESPASS frontman Steve Mills. Denny left, to be substituted by Tim Harris, but the band folded in 1984. The final gig took place at the General Wolfe pub in Coventry. Slater and Wilcox initially founded BROKEN ENGLISH, but this unit soon faded. Wilcox formed Progressive Rock act CHASE before joining the reformed DIAMOND HEAD in 1990. Steve Slater formed PREDATOR whilst Gordon founded ROUGH JUSTICE alongside ex-STEEL frontman Paul Tunnicliffe.
In 2003 the group was resurrected, now featuring former TREDEGAR vocalist Paul Parry and re-billed as REKUIEM for a five song demo EP. Debut REKUIEM album 'Time Will Tell', released through Majestic Rock in January 2006, included a cover version of BLACK SABBATH's 'Paranoid' plus newly recorded versions of 'Angel Of Sin' and 'Sacrificial Wanderer'. Japanese versions of the album added a bonus track 'Death Row'.

PANZA DIVISION - We'll Rock The World 7" (1982) UK

PANZA TRAX RECORDS
A Sheffield based five piece originally formed as ROKKA in 1978 - with a line-up of ex-STRAND and NIGHTSHIFT vocalist Phil Casey, guitarists Glenn Marples and Tony West, bassist Peter Burgin and drummer Simon Freeston. ROKKA split with Casey and Marples took over on lead vocals, just prior to issuing the single 'Come Back' in 1980 on their own Rokka label. Shortly after, the band renamed itself PANZA DIVISION.
West was superseded by Rick Corcoran and the band supported the likes of SAXON, Y&T and TWISTED SISTER. Indeed, such exposure led to heavy label interest, the band already having come close admidst the signing frenzy of the NWoBHM. However, their legacy remains a self financed single and a track on the 'Scene Of The Crime' compilation alongside SAVAGE and TYRANT.
Simon Freeston was to be replaced by ex-BITTER SUITE drummer Steve Mitchell and, in 1984, bassist Alan Edwards joined WITCHFYNDE and Steve Mitchell formed FIELD FORCE with former RAGE guitarist Mick Devonport.
In 1986 PANZA DIVISION metamorphosed into LONELY HEARTS.

HIGH TREASON - Saturday Night Special 7" (1980) UK

BURLINGTON RECORDS
This is their "Saturday Night Special" 7" which was released on Burlington Records. Nice solid riffing stuff, this is NOT the LYNYRD SKYNYRD song of the same name, but it manages to stand nicely on its own 2 feet.
High Treason were originally formed in 1978 and eventually drifted apart around five years later. After a break of around twenty years we have re-formed and enhanced the original line-up with the addition of two new members. We are once again playing live with a mixture of both old and new material, have recorded a five track CD, and are currently working on a new album which is due for release in 2006.

MITHRANDIR - Magick 7'' EP (1982) UK

NEW LEAF RECORDS
Mithrandir were the youngest of those bands grouped under the banner of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Since the height of the boom in collecting NWOBHM records in the mid-1990s, Mithrandir's "Magick EP" and "Dreamers Of Fortune" single have been valued at £75 and £50 respectively, a far cry from the pound they cost in 1982.
Dale, Keith, Graham and Paul - recorded the tracks for the "Magick EP" (Call Of The Wild, All The Time Nonstop and Eyes Of The Madman) in a day at the snowbound Live Music Studio in Fitzwilliam Street, Peterborough, Christmas 1981. The boys represented Sawtry Village College in the TSB Rockschool Contest. With these tapes Mithrandir sailed through selection, but at the live round in Nottingham the judges said their music was too complex to take in. Indeed, they were precocious talents undaunted by challenges older and more experienced musicians would have avoided. By then they were unconcerned anyway as their EP had been released.
569 "Magick EP"s (New Leaf Records SVC01) were pressed. They sold quickly, especially to schoolmates, and gained Mithrandir considerable local press coverage and gigs at venues and festivals through the rest of the year. Collectors should note that each EP was numbered in green ink on the bag, which was inserted in a polystyrene cover with simple green-on-white back and front wraps.

End the Rox discography, this is their sole full length release, 1983's "Violent Breed". By the time they recorded this, the Mancunian rockers had toughened up their approach considerably, the big chantalong choruses are still present & correct, but there's much more menace in the guitar and drum attack. Just look at them on the cover, these guys meant business, or perhaps they were looking for "business".

REVENGE RECORDS
Hugely entertaining London based Hard Rockers. This is southern fried acid boogie (copyright Xavier Russell) every cowboy booted stomp of the way. The Lightning Raiders aren't the coolest of bands in metal circles, but if you can forgive them their occasional Stonesy aberrations you'll find a whole heap of enjoyment herein.

MOBY DICK - Can't Have My Body Tonight 7" (1982) UK

EBONY RECORDS
A nice Hard Rockin' 7" from the NWOBHM now for you, this is "Can't Have My Body Tonight" by Moby Dick on the very collectible Ebony label. This is typically British Hard Rock, with quite a 1970's feel, harking back to bands like Bad Company, but with more firepower. The band are best remembered for introducing the world to the extraordinary vocal talents of one Max Bacon, who would later take the mic for such bands as NIGHTWING, BRONZ & GTR. Later he'd also appear with MIKE OLDFIELD and release a couple of solo albums to boot. The mans got a golden larynx as you'll soon hear here. Nice disc!

The Sussex quintet little-known like SUSPECT were yet another on the never-ending list of minor hopefuls who put out a very limited private single through the Ellie Jay pressing facility in the NWOBHM era. Issued in 1981, recorded at Wave Studios in Twickenham, their two-trackers single semi-restrained numbers with a vague feeling of the genuine NWOBHM spirit.

Sweet Savage - 1996 comeback album from the infamous NWOBHM group that recorded the all-time classic "Killing Time" back in the early 80s, which was later made semi-famous as a Metallica cover version. This album remains true to the style that made them a name and kicks off with their own re-recorded version of the title track. Lots of these tracks were written in the early 80s by this legendary Irish band.

This is the second and last LP by Manchester's BLOOD MONEY, disbanded in the latter months of 1987, after vocalist Danny Foxx had reached a decision to join a more ambitious outfit, as he later explained: 'I left the band because they refused to gig. The thing with BLOOD MONEY was that it was all thrash and very boring. So I set about putting a new band together by advertising in "Kerrang" and various music shops in Manchester." In contrast to the Neat and Ebony labels, who tended to favour unknown, grass-roots level acts, the Midlands-based Heavy Metal Records frequently (particular for use on their compilation) picked up on those who had previously released their own product.
This was the case with London's METAL MIRROR, who, like EXPOZER, OVERKILL, NO FAITH and PERSIAN RISK (all of whom had issued a private single before-hand), were afforded the opportunity to lay down one of their numbers for use on the famous pair of "Heavy Metal Heroes" samplers.

The cover of this 1981 release was a very funny, yet uninspiring one, but musically THE HANDSOME BEASTS were one of the light/mid-weight NWOBHM bands. They released 2 albums in the early 80s on HEAVY METAL RECORDS (a label found because nobody would sign HANDSOME BEASTS in 1980!), and this re-issue of their debut ‘Beastiality’ comes with 4 bonustracks. Musically like many other bands, also THE HANDSOME BEASTS were playing that typical early 80s NWOBHM style, like SAXON and RAVEN, with a slight 70s SLADE/SWEET vibe in the instrumental part, yet with very strong vocals of singer Garry Dalway. 13 tracks are on this CD, which has a good sound and not a dated one like you would expect. Songs like “Sweeties”, “Breaker” (very strong uptempo rocker, pure SAXON), “Local heroes” and “All riot now” stood the test of time and are instant classic pieces of early 80s NWOBHM. A must-have release for fans of this style, which ruled Europe in and around 1980.

VIRTUE - We Stand To Fight 7" (1985) UK

Oxfordshire's Virtue started way back in 1981 when brothers Matt (guitar, vocals) and Tudor (vocals) Sheldon began sharing musical ideas after school, influenced by established artists such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but it wasn't until 1984 when they got things off the ground with a demo called "Virtue - Defenders". Although it wasn't widely circulated the brothers recruited new band members Boz Beast (guitar), Darren Prothero (Bass) and Simon Walters (Drums) and began working thier way around the local clubs; Although still too young the boys appeared at the door with their gear and demanded to play, and it worked! Eventually in 1985 they recorded the phenomenal "We Stand to Fight" 7" Single, a powerful, epic, proto-Power Metal affair with brilliant musicmanship all around, unique vocals and brilliant guitar work (including some great duels) made this a cut above the rest of the NWOBHM crowd, especially considering they were so young. The single was so impressive it even had the mighty EMI label sniffing around, but unfortunately nothing went passed the planning stages. Re-release around the 2003 by Phoenix Records on yellow vinyl.
