CHILDHOOD'S END - Childhood's End EP (1984) USA

SELF RELEASED
The lone self released, self titled 12" EP by little known American Heavy Metal trio Childhood's End. Released on their own Childhood's End label in 1984, this four tracker falls neatly into the Melodic Metal category, heavy enough for the headbangers, but catchy enough for radio too, with fantastic guitar from Dino Alden and very impressive vocals from singer Jennifer Hall.
The band had enough individuality to have made a real splash, but unfortunately it wasn't to be, and no more was heard from Childhood's End.

TITAN - East Wind West Wind 7" (1980) UK

WILD DOG RECORDS
West Midlands 70s Hard Rock act TITAN started life as HOI POLLOI, taking on the TITAN title during 1979. The group cut a four track demo and self-finced a 7" single. Do not confused with another NWoBHM group also called "TITAN".

(Rocky Shades)
Only 100 copies of 'East Wind / West Wind' were pressed. With the band's demise vocalist Rocky Shades (a.k.a. Robert Berkeley) founded high profile Glam Rock band WRATHCHILD. He would also serve a tenure with Punk band DISCHARGE. Guitarist Maz Mitrenko joined Birmingham's HANDSOME BEASTS. Subsequently, Mitrenko joined PSYCHO WARD, the band forged by ex-LONDON, MADAM X, HURRICANE and SHY vocalist John Ward.

WITCH - The Hex Is On MLP (1984) USA

O.T.T. RECORDS
Visit the beautiful official site www.witchtheband.com full of good stuff.
Rereleased in 1985 by Axe Killer records with different cover art and different logo-band-font.

(AXE KILLER RECORDS)
WITCH drummer Punky Peru and vocalist Peter Wabitt first worked together in the group AMPAGE in 1979. The pair split from that outfit a year later to form DAMIEN with former W.A.S.P. / DANTE FOX and GREAT WHITE bassist Don Costa. However, Costa was hired by OZZY OSBOURNE and DAMIEN folded.
During 1982 Wabitt and Peru hooked up together once more, enlisting guitarist Ronny Too and ex MESSENGER and JEKYLL & HYDE bassist Jim Warmon, to create the Glam Metal band WITCH. The original intention had been to call the group SAVAGE, but the existence of the British NWoBHM band of the same name forced the quartet to have other ideas.
WITCH debuted in 1984 with the mini album 'The Hex Is On' before Peter Wabitt left the ranks and Punky Peru drafted in a female singer before the group fell apart and the drummer spent a stint in jail.
A WITCH resurrection occurred in 1988 when a 12" single, 'Nobody Sleeps', surfaced. The new incarnation of the group included Peru and bassist Jim Warmon alongside LITA FORD keyboard player David Ezrin. In fact, Peru and Ezrin co-wrote the track 'Fatal Passion' on a LITA FORD album of the period.

MARSHALL LAW - Marshall Law (1989) UK

HEAVY METAL RECORDS
The debut album "Marshall Law" has been widely described as a cult classic.
This Birmingham, England-based heavy metal quintet comprised Andy Pike (vocals), Dave Martin (guitar), Andy Southwell (guitar), Rog Davis (bass) and Mick Donovan (drums). Following in the tradition of UK rockers such as Judas Priest, Saxon and Iron Maiden, they transposed melody onto infectious, circular power-riffs, cleverly avoiding any monotony by the injection of twin lead guitar solos between rousing choruses. Signing to the Heavy Metal Records label, they released their self-titled debut in 1989 to considerable critical acclaim. Touted as the spearhead of a new revival in traditional UK heavy rock, there was nevertheless a lengthy eight-year gap before the release of Metal Detector.

MARSHALL LAW - Power Game (1992) UK

SYSTEM X RECORDS
West Midlands-based Marshall Law were part of the second wave of British heavy metal and this 1993 album, their second, is a corker. While their debut album nodded heavily at Judas Priest (and was unfairly criticised in the process), this follow-up release takes that influence in a much heavier power metal direction, while also incorporating the melodic end of Anthrax and Megadeth.
Guitarists Martin and Southwell mix chunky riffs and hot solos, with producer Robin George turning that into a wall of sound – one you hit at speed from the opening track. Meanwhile, Another Generation is classic power metal, with Andy Pyke’s vocals mixing quick-fire bursts with high pitched anthemic touches.
Off the back of grunge and in the face of alternative metal, this album may have been out of place at the time, but with the current trends in power metal and resurgence of Judas Priest, this is a timely reminder of just how good Marshall Law are. Sadly the CD tells us nothing of the original release, or even that this is a reissue. The bonus track and reproduction of the original sleevenotes and lyrics do save some grace though.

HEAVY METAL ARMY - Heavy Metal Army 1 (1981) JAP

NEXUS RECORDS
Bootleg CD by HOT METAL RECORDS is circulating.
HEAVY METAL ARMY, this late 1970's "metal" band from the land of the rising sun. Their lone self titled 1981 album were heavy keyboard laden hard rock anthems with some outstanding guitar breaks from Shinki Sugama, and great melodic vocals from John Joseph Patterson.
The band formed as a supergroup of sorts, with members coming on board from other big Japanese acts of the 1970's. Members CV's included time spent with Nipponese luminaries such as CARMEN MAKI, MARINER, CONDITION GREEN (who were Japan's answer to LYNYRD SKYNYRD!), CREATION, and MURASAKI (who were a very DEEP PURPLE influenced act).
After the band's break up following this sole album, some members would go on to form EASTERN ORBIT in 1981.
EASTERN ORBIT recorded two albums, one studio, "Future Force", and one live, "Journey To Utopia", which included live versions of two songs from the Heavy Metal Army album. Eastern Orbit split in 1983.

SASS RECORDS
The highly prized sole release by SNOW, a fantastic four piece Hard Rock/Metal combo formed in Los Angeles (California) 1978, who stalked the clubs & dives of the Sunset Strip as the '70's gave way to the '80's. Their 10'' self titled mini album appeared on the tiny independent Dynamo label in 1980, before a re release the following year on the equally minuscule Sass imprint. Despite the buzz surrounding them, it all went tits up for Snow & they split in late '81, with guitarist Carlos Cavazo reappearing in Quiet Riot shortly thereafter. His brother, Snow drummer Tony, became the man behind the kit for hair rock act Hurricane across a pair of well received late '80's albums. This is harder fayre than either of those acts, but with an ear for a good chorus, these young and hungry musicians knew how to kick ass. Expect to pay between $150 & $200 for an original, or get it here & now for nothing. 2nd press. contains black & white fold out poster.

AMULET - Amulet (1979) USA

MONSTER RECORDS
An overlooked gem from the dusty past.
The only album from this four piece band from Indiana. First released in 1979, it's a set of original hard rock material mostly recorded live in the studio. It's a remarkably tight effort that is an essential piece for all collectors of US acid psyche and heavy rock. It's an extremely rare collector record that was recorded in 1979 and released on the band's own label! Punchy hard rock with screaming lead guitars all over the place!

Long-haired guitar rawk from the obscure Midwestern band known as Amulet, circa 1980. Reissued for your hessian pleasure by Monster Records, alongside the likes of Ultra, Full Moon, and Truth And Janey (all of whom we've previously listed). Amulet started off in '78 as a cover band doing stuff by ZZ Top, Van Halen, Hendrix, UFO and suchlike. Though a popular local concert draw, they still barely managed to save enough dough to record and self-release this album in 1980. No money for overdubs, so it's got that live feel, appropriate for their party hardy high power hard rock format. How much you're gonna like this kinda depends how you feel about lines like: "She was seventeen / young love machine" (from "Just Like A Woman"). Good times badass boogie rock wank fer shure. Actually, they had a heavier, more serious side too, with religious/philosophical themes ("Do You Live Again", "Life Is Living"). But don't look for a lot of sophistication and deep thoughts -- this mostly about groovy stuff like the unintentionally funny "Funk 'n' Punk" or "Radar Love" re-write "Person To Person". Fun and authentic.

2. Sea of Fear
3. Do You Live Again

EVIL - Evil's Message MLP (1984) DEN

RAVE ON RECORDS
Evil is a Danish metal band, originally formed as Never Mind back i 1982. From 1983 the band was known as Evil. Due to the bands ambitions it went through a number of line-up changes, until the band consisted of the four unique members:
Pearl Angel - Vocals
Kim Xmas - Guitar
Pete Hurricane - Bass
Freddie Wolf - Drums
In 1983 Evil recorded a promotional demo, which landed them a record deal with Rave On Records. The following year Evil entered a studio in Holland and recorded what would become the legendary Evil's Message EP in a mere 10 days!
Evil was one of the most promosing metal acts in Denmark and they wrote songs for what would have been their first full length album. Unfortuneatly the director for Rave On Records at the time didn't like these new songs and this caused Pearl to leave the band. 22 years after the breakup, the year is 2007 and rumors started on the internet saying that Evil had been reunited. This is in fact true and the band plans to record their first full length soon, since they never got around to do it in the 80's. Another rumor going around that probably King Diamond (credited as Kim Xmas (and on the Evil/Sacrilege cd, released by Axe Killer in 1999 as King Xmas) played the guitar in Evil. But it's never been confirmed.

IVORY TIGER - Metal Mountain EP (1986) USA

AMBUSH RECORDS
Ivory Tiger from USA were an traditional Heavy Metal quartet formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1984. After a couple of years of local gigging, they released this, their sole slab of vinyl in 1986 on the Ambush Records label. The four song "Metal Mountain" EP, contained great fantasy inspired spit & sawdust Heavy Metal and stylistically sounded much like it had been recorded 3 or 4 years earlier. It sold poorly at the time, but the intervening years have seen it pick up a dedicated cult following, so much so that a bootleg split CD by Revenge of True Metal Records including the EP is now circulating. A six song demo cassette followed in early '87, but it failed to generate further interest from labels. In 1989, frustrated by the lack of progress, the band moved to Florida where they changed their name to AMBER ROSE. They carried on until 1992, but split without any further recordings surfacing.

STYGIAN SHORE - Stygian Shore EP (1984) USA

ROADSTER RECORDS
Every true Manilla Road fan knows about Roadster Records, the company of Mark Shelton. The hard to find original releases of Metal, Invasion or Crystal Logic were on Roadster and if you see a copy of it somewhere on eBay, you should be prepared to pay way more than 100 $ for it.
But there was another band in the Wichita area around in that time, a band called STYGIAN SHORE. They played metal too, but not in the epic way the Road does. You can compare the band to the older Manilla Road song though because of some of the basic guitar riffs. The e.p. with four tracks was recorded in two days in March 1984 and were produced by Mark Shelton at Miller Studio, engineered by Larry Funk. True MR-fans know this name too.
The e.p. contains four tracks. Stygian Metal and Tidal Waves are really good songs, true early metal with great guitar-riffs. Don´t Look Now still is a good rocker, while Luv Ta Rock Ya isn´t that great...the name sais it all. The sound is pretty good for just two days of recording.

The band were supposed to go on tour as a support act for Venom on their USA and Canada dates, but their American manager somehow fucked it all up. They still played a few gigs around Sweden, though. OZ - Heavy Metal Heroes (1982) FIN

TYFON GRAMMOFON / KRäK RECORDS
Oz was a great heavy metal band who formed in the town of Nakkila, Finland in 1977. Their debut album was released on a Swedish record label - Tyfon Grammofon in 1982, originally released with the title "THE OZ". Second issue (on Wave Records) is called "HEAVY METAL HEROES" also released as "HEAVY-METAL HEROES / HEY YOU" which is the cover shown here. By then the line-up consisted of Ape De Martini (vocals), Kari Elo (Guitar), Tauno Vajavaara (Bass guitar) & Mark Ruffneck (Drums). The Second-hand lady/Rather Knight-single was released the same year. The band gigged around Finland and even appeared on Finnish TV playing Hey You and Second-hand lady backed up with pyrotechnics and all.
Soon afterwards Jay C Blade was asked to join the band as a bass guitarist. Jay C. Blade had been kicked out of Sarcofagus in which he had been handling the lead vocals on the Envoy of death album released in 1980, after which he had re-joined his first band Masque. Jay joined OZ, bringing with him Esa Niva from Masque. Esa Niva got out of the band pretty quickly though, and somewhere along the way Spooky Wolff (ex Noitawaimo) and Speedy Foxx were recruited, both on guitars. The classic lineup was now complete. They played their debut gig at the Göta Lejon theatre in Stockholm. Jay C Blade became the main contributor of songs and soon the band recorded their next album.

LEGEND - From the Fjords (1979) USA

EMPIRE RECORDS
Legend is a quite unknown american heavy metal band who were formed in 1978 in Connecticut, Kevin Nugent and Fred Melillo in the early years were friends and played together in cover bands mostly a cover band called Edge. Eventually Edge disbanded due to the new uprise of disco and other music and the loss of interest in rock and roll. Kevin Nugent(guitar) ended up meeting Ray Frigon(Drums) and John Judge(Bass) and formed Legend. John Judge was later kicked out of the band for trying to record stuff written by the band as a whole outside of the band. Kevin Nugent then called old friend Fred Melillo to fill in as Legend's bass player. The band recorded the "From the Fjords" album and released it in '79 with only 500 vinyl copies. The band never played many gigs due to the lack of a metal scene in Connecticut. The band disbanded after Ray Frigon quit the band due to the proud decision of becoming a devout Christian. There were attempts to replace Ray as the drummer, but without Ray the band wasn't the same. They eventually found another drummer and formed the band Mercenary. In 1983 Kevin Nugent passed away in his sleep.
This album is one of the holy grails of vintage heavy metal vynil album collectors. The band Legend put out just this one record, self-produced and self-manufactured, in 1979.
BOOTLEGGED on vinyl (500 numbered copies) in 1997. The 1979 originals are worth obscene amounts of money (topping $1000), and even the vinyl bootleg goes for steep prices (150+ Euros). The reissue planned by Monster Records, and now Rockadrome, as Monster has gone under, has been stalled for years. The original pressing of "From The Fjords" definitely had an insert with a lyric sheet.

STAMPEDE - Hurricane Town (1983) UK

London based quartet Stampede appeared around 1981, rising from the ashes of the Bristol-based Lautrec, while just about hanging on to the fast-fading NWOBHM movement, such as it was.

SCARAB - Poltergeist 7" (1984) UK

PHARAOH RECORDS
This second version of SCARAB are slightly less of a mystery than their original English namesakes (the other band SCARAB release only a single in 1981 called "Rock Night"), the four-piece hailing from the West Midlands and forming in around 1983. Their early activities no doubt revolved around small-time club appearances and collecting rejection letters from record companies, although they eventually made it to the vinyl stage at some point in 1984. Their one and only single was a heavy slice of NWOBHM which paired the atmospheric "Poltergeist" (later featured on the "NWOBHM Vol. 6" bootleg CD) with the somewhat more straight-ahead and pacey "Hell On Wheels", both of which were perfectly listenable.
TRACKS:
01. Poltergeist
02. Hell On Wheels
