FLASHPOINT - No Point Of Reference (1987) UK

PRIVATE PRESSING LP
RELEASED by CD BABY
FLASHPOINT, formed in 1987 and is the solo outfit of former BITCHES SIN guitar player Ian Toomey, which is more than just a continuation of this legendary NWOBHM outfit. Although there are some ex members in the line up of this band, the music ... full description of FLASHPOINT definitely has a more melodic approach than the bone hard, heavymetal of BITCHES SIN. Ian and his brother Pete teamed up with Steve Turtonon drums and Kev Graham on vocals and bass. Frank Quegan and Dave Rosingana joined the ranks for the recordings adding some backing vocals and keyboards to some of the songs of their debut album 'No Point Of Reference'. Thus, a new post NWOBHM band was born, who presented themselves to the world by means of this wonderful debut album. An albumthat didn't only show us the more melodic approach of the Toomey brothers, but it also proved that these guys still know how to play some mean guitarriffs and solos. Checkout the website www.bitchessin.co.uk for more news and info about these guitar players.

RITUAL - Widow (1983/2008) UK

LEGEND RECORDS
This old cult band from the UK, started playing in 1973 and it wasn't until 1983 until they got their first full-length out called "Widow". Strangely enough the band was referred to as WIDOW back then because apparently the records that were floating around had no RITUAL name on it. RITUAL blends an unusual mix of 70's heavy rock and 80's rock sounds from the N.W.O.B.H.M. with a real dream-like effect. They're hard hitting old English Rock 'N Roll with a great clean singer/songwriter Gypsy Re Bethe that you might find yourself singing along to these infectious choruses. Their sound is in the vein of fellow British bands Witchfynde, Pagan Altar and Legend.

BLACK ROSE - Boys Will Be Boys (1984) UK

BULLET RECORDS
Originally formed in 1979 in Slatburn, Cleveland, England when three members of Ice: Steve Bardsley (G), Marty Rahn (B) and Mark (D) saw Kenny Nicholson (G) play "God Save The Queen" with his feet and kick the shit out of his guitar on HENDRIX's "Wild Thing" while doing a one-off support gig at the Zetland Hotel, Saltburn with two friends.
They were impressed enough to ask him to join them. They did a few gigs but soon realized they needed a better drummer. Charlie MacKenzie was recruited and the band changed their name to BLACK ROSE. This line up then gigged regularly building up a huge local following.
Their first demo was done at Neat in 1981. Drummer Charlie MacKenzie eventually left to join local band TAURUS and Kenny auditioned for WHITE SPIRIT after Janick Gers left in 1982. After playing with such a pro-band and finding it very easy, although Kenny didn't get the job, he thought he could do better and left BLACK ROSE to eventually form HOLLAND, HAMMER and FAST KUTZ. Chris Watson joined on guitar and Malla Smith joined on drums. Marty Rahn left next to be replaced by Mick Thompson on bass. This line-up made the 1984 album "Boys Will Be Be Boys" which was recorded at Impulse Studios, Wallsend.

DUMPY'S RUSTY NUTS - Somewhere in England 2LP (1984) UK

LANDSLIDE RECORDS
Dumpy's Rusty Nuts first appeared on the London Rock scene in 1981.
After a short time DRN released their first single "Just for Kicks" which went into the Heavy Metal charts. This was soon followed by their second single, the now legendary Bikers Anthem "Boxhill or Bust". The success of the singles along with a UK tour with the Blues Band fronted by ex Manfred Mann singer Paul Jones saw that the bands future was secure.
DRN then started to tour around the UK playing all the rock clubs including the now defunct London Marquee Club, which saw them hold the all time record for appearances at this legendary venue. Since 1981 DRN have played the Reading Rock Festival (twice), appeared on national television + radio and supported and toured with many major rock bands such as MOTORHEAD, HAWKWIND and STATUS QUO.
DRN have also played at the Isle of Man TT several times and many biker rallies including the Derbyshire Rock'n'Blues.
DRN's roots lie mainly in the Heavy Rock/ Blues music of the late sixties and seventies, taking influences from ERIC CLAPTON and JIMI HENDRIX through to PINK FLOYD, DR FEELGOOD and MOTORHEAD. This coupled with MARTIN CONNELY'S very strong bass guitar and the flamboyant drumming of ANDY SMITH along with DUMPY'S soloing skills, use of guitar effects and synth pedals make a very entertaining combination.
AT this moment in time when the UK seems to be overrun with unoriginal tribute bands, talentless boy bands and tuneless bimbos, DRN are still very much a force to be reckoned with , a band for the future mixing an endless experience of touring with an in-depth passion for hard edged blues/boogie.
After many personnel changes over the bands 20yr history the present lineup of DUMPY, ANDY and MARTIN has been stable since 1995 and has proved to be one of the most powerful rock /blues outfits in the UK.
In the last couple of years Dumpy has been developing a solo project, SpaceNutz with which he has supported Hawkwind, and performing solo Acoustic sets to much critical acclaim.
More recently he has been guesting with Hawkwind on their recent tours.

DUMPY'S RUSTY BOLTS - Boxhill or Bust 7" (1982) UK

COOL KING RECORDS
Excess alcohol in-take meant half the band had severe difficulties even standing up, so Dumpy split in February '82 to form the slightly less inebriated 'biker rock band' trio of Dumpy's Rusty Nuts (with bass duties originally performed by Mac McKensie).
Biker rock? Well, Dumpy was a 60s greaser, and gigs at the likes of the Greenwich White Swan saw the band attract hoards of their 80s equivalents. The connection was confirmed on vinyl via the Blues Band's Cool KIng label, first with a sprightly cover of Mike Sarne's 'Just For Kicks' in June '82 and then with the self-penned peaen to motorcycle mecca Boxhill, 'Boxhill Or Bust'.
Released in mid-September to coincide with their national tour with the Blues Band, the single was enhanced with references to such haute cuisine delicacies as 'a cup of splosh and a greasy dog', and was adequately summed up by Lemmy who dubbed it "Chas and Dave backed by Status Quo".
The records saw the dawn of the Nuts/Bolts controversy. Dumpy reckons his 'nuts' meant loonies not gonads, but natch the genital connection was instantly seized on by wise-cracking DJs and the Beeb promptly banned them. Cool King suggested the name change but to no avail, and now contrary to every other gig ad you read, they're definitely Nuts again. Natch, this results in plenty of young gels assaulting poor Dumps demanding to know "if it's true about your nuts (knoworrimean etc)".
His stage patter has also been known to provoke. In Wales, a cleaning lady was so upset by his swearing that she stormed the stage, her mop brandished like a bayonet, and tried to wash his mouth out.

They changed their name to Dumpy's Rusty Nuts after their first two singles (this one is the second one).

CHARGER - Desperadoes 7'' (1984) UK

BCSK (private) RECORDS
Charger were latecomers to the NWOBHM scene, with their only release being a single that saw the light of day in 1986-1987 (earlier release dates reported by some people have been refuted; see Malc MacMillian's 'The NWOBHM Encyclopedia'). Both tracks are fantastic, high-energy numbers. 'Desperadoes' moves at a furious pace with absolutely blistering guitar work and is on par with the fastest NWOBHM songs (e.g., Jaguar's 'Axe Crazy', Sweet Savage's 'Eye of the Storm', etc). Songs like this one clearly demonstrate how speed and thrash metal grew out of the NWOBHM scene (of course, both genres had taken off well before this particular single was released). The b-side, 'Are You Out There', is also a high-octane headbanger, but it has a more anthemic vibe to it; it's the kind of song the crowd is meant to sing along to with fists held high. Both songs feature a great vocal performance, the singer having a strong, 'pure' voice similar to bands like STAGEFRIGHT and HOLLOW GROUND. The production, while not stellar (it was a small-time recording after all), doesn't hurt the music either.
The single is a rare and collectible item among NWOBHM fans, although its late release date seems to be something of a turn-off to some purists. Personally, I think it is arguably the best NWOBHM single I've ever heard, ranking right up there with such classics as Mendes Prey, Aurora, and Satan. For those not interested in tracking down old, expensive vinyl, the single was included on the 'Heavy Metal Obscurities Volume 2' compilation CD.

BLADE RUNNER - Hunted (1984) UK

EBONY RECORDS
London's BLADE RUNNER formed as WHITE TIGER but changed name and scored a record deal with Ebony Records (in Hull) even before Steve McKay joined the band. Gary Jones later founded the hardrock band PHANTASM along with drummer Dave Dufort (ANGEL WITCH, TYTAN), vocalist Carol Hendrix and second guitarist Mark Wilde.
The cover artwork was originally intended to be used for Savage, but in it's unfinished version, logos were switched and Blade Runner got it instead.

ARAGORN - Noonday "The Aragorn Anthology" (2003) UK

CASTLE SANCTUARY RECORDS
Hull Metal band, founded in 1978 comprising vocalist Chris Dunne, guitarist Jon Hull, bass player Dale Lee and Chris Dadson on the drums. During April of 1980 erstwhile ARTHUR KADMON and LUDUS drummer usurped Dadson, who later teamed up with Manchester's SAM THUNDER before joining CHATEAUX in 1983 to record the 'Firepower' album.
Aragorn (Uk) recorded their single 'Black Ice' as a trio consisting of frontman Chris Dunne, guitarist Jon Hull and drummer Mike Ellis. The band adding second guitarist Andy Halliwell and bassist Chris White in early 1981. ARAGORN then contributed the track 'Noonday' to the Neat Records sampler 'Leadweight'. Intensive gigging on the burgeoning NWoBHM circuit saw valuable support slots to the likes of SAXON, TRUST White Spirit, Iron Maiden, SPIDER and Angel Witch. An EP, 'Night Is Burning', was cut for Neat Records but unfortunately unreleased. Both Halliwell and White exited before the close of 1981. Bassist Nigel Stollof was incorporated but Aragorn (Uk) folded in April of 1983, just after completion of recordings for a debut album.
Jon Hull was responsible for forming Touched and is now sound engineer for many acts. including American Thrashers Machine Head.
Unbeknownst to Aragorn (Uk) the band would play a part in the genesis of extreme Metal when Swiss Avant garde Metal act Celtic Frost used 'Black Ice' as one of their early rehearsal songs. Drummer Mike Ellis, following a session career with the likes of SIMPLY RED and P.J. PROBY, would much later gig with GLORIOUS then join London based Metal band MEGGIDO.
Prompted by a resurgence of interest, including track inclusions on the 2002 compilations 'The Flame Burns On', 'Lead Weight' and 'The Neat Singles Collection', ARAGORN's shelved album of 1983 looks set for release by Sanctuary Records in 2003.

WITCHFINDER GENERAL - Buried Amongst the Ruins (2007) UK

NUCLEAR WAR NOW!
& BURIED BY TIME AND DUST RECORDS

Witchfinder General, one of the few bands of the NWOBHM era to opt for the classic early BLACK SABBATH dirge rather than the more uptempo metal of most of their countrymen, has revealed the details of its upcoming collection of obscure material. Entitled "Buried Amongst the Ruins", the release couples for the first time the "Burning a Sinner" 7", "Soviet Invasion" 12" and four live tracks from 1981 (including the never-before-heard "Phantasmagorical"). The package also features never-before-seen photos of the band's original recording lineup of Zeeb Parkes (vocals), Phil Cope (guitar), Toss McCready (bass) and Steve Kinsell (drums) along with pictures of the original lyric book for many of the songs, gig flyers and original artwork and perhaps some other suprises. (Nuclear War Now! Description).

This is a must for all Doom freaks and NWOBHM maniacs out there.
WITCHFINDER GENERAL mainly gained fame after their disbandment. A NWOBHM band whose sound is clearly influenced heavily by Black Sabbath. The band became notorious for its album covers, featuring the band in medieval costumes torturing semi-naked women (witches). The band was one of the earlier bands with a Doom-metal'ish sound, and has reached cult status these days (esp. among older fans).

CYNIC - Do Or Die (1982) UK

SELF-RELEASED CASSETTE
Worcestershire Metal band CYNIC was founded by former RENEGADE guitarist Shaun Grant in 1980. Joining him on guitar would be second guitarist Dom Heptinstall, an ex-member of famed local act HEALTH WARNING, a band unit which spawned future members of VIRGIN STAR, GRIM REAPER and IPANEMA KATZ. CYNIC's rhythm section comprised of bassist Barry Pedlingham and drummer Tim Batkin. Tony Eyres acted as frontman. With this line up CYNIC cut the 1982 'Do Or Die' demo tape, leading in turn to the 1983 7" single 'Suicide' / 'No Time At All'. Now a highly sought after NWoBHM rarity only 500 copies of this single were pressed and mainly sold at gigs.
Following this release CYNIC lost the services of Eyres, Batkin and Pedlingham. The latter joined fellow Metal band TYGA MYRA. However a revised version of CYNIC would be re-activated by Grant, re-enrolling Batkin with new faces singer John Ridsdale and bassist Neil Orgee. This variant of CYNIC apparently recorded a four track EP 'Rebel Eye' before moving in a distinctly Blues Rock direction. Later line up changes witnessed the exit of Ridsdale, to R&B band THE AWFUL TRUTH, and Orgee. CYNIC soldiered on drafting a singer named Colin and bassist Gareth but folded in 1989. Grant regrouped as Blues act BAD ATTITUDE inducting a drummer from MIDNIGHT REIGN. He would later found SONS OF SPOCK.
CYNIC drummer Tim Batkin and bassist Neil Orgee would later be found as a member of RUSH tribute band TOM SAWYER. The duo latterly performed with another covers act BEFORE THE STORM, a band fronted by PRAYING MANTIS and erstwhile ONSLAUGHT and TORINO vocalist Tony O'Hora.

DEMON PACT - Eaten Alive 7" (1981) UK

SLIME RECORDS
"Eaten Alive" was the sole single by Demon Pact, which was issued in 1981 on Slime Records in a great picture sleeve.
This followed 1980's three song demo, which attracted some great press attention for the band, as did the track they contributed to the "Kent Rock" compilation LP..
The four-piece band, formed in Bromley in Kent in 1979, were regarded as one of the foremost in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and the single has become a much sought-after collector's item over the years.
The single was the band's only official release at the time, but they did record a further four song demo in 1982. The 7" and 1982 demo tracks were combined for the 2006 High Roller Records limited edition "Demon Pact" Mini LP.

In a smart move the band also released a 12” single called "Stand up" which quickly mutated into an unexpected success story when entered the Swedish Rock singel charts as a staggering number nine. Before "Stand up", a triumph like this was pretty much unheard of the exponents of music as heavy as AXEWITCH.

AXE WITCH - The Lord Of Flies (1983) SWE

FINGERPRINT RECORDS

GOTHAM CITY - Gotham City 7" (1982) SWE

BRUTE FORCE RECORDS
Swedish Metallic majesty, this here is "Gotham City" by the Umeå based quartet of the same name. This one has it all, the riffing is exemplary, the chorus dares you to sit still and if you don't join in on the singalonga section at the end of the a-side after the 1st play, then you must be dead, that's the only decent excuse you can possibly have. And you know what? The B-Side is every bit as good. Damn the ignorant & xenophobic British Metal press of the time for not exposing me to this great music first time 'round, i missed out on Axewitch, Heavy Load & Gotham City, so they could write about Sammy Hagar and Heavy Pettin'. Damn them , damn them to hell! Go on, damn yourselves to hell too, let Gotham City into your cold black hearts.
My favourite Swedish Metal bands.
