VALHALLA - Return of the Mystic Warrior (1984/2001) USA

UNISOUND RECORDS
Reissued on CD with 6 bonus tracks by Cult Metal Classics and different cover art. Unisound reissued the Cult Metal Classics version with the same tracklist but reverted back to the original cover art.
From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania formed in 1979, VALHALLA was a great epic/progressive metal. This album is a best of/compilation composed by their EP "Valhalla" released in 1984 and all their unreleased songs. All in this album is damn good. As far as I know they never released another LP, and it's too bad, as they were promising. They moved to Phoenix, the band folded and vocalist David Fefolt ended up in some cheesy L.A. based hair metal band.

TYTON – Castle Donnington+Mind Over Metal (1984/1987) USA

IRON WORKS/ENIGMA ENTERTAINMENT
European import, featuring two full length albums, on one CD. "Castle Donnington", Iron Works label, 1984, and "Mind Over Metal", Enigma Entertainment, 1987. This amazing and hyper-rare CD is a double album released by the Houston, Texas group TYTON. Good review of "Mind Over Metal" in Heaven's Metal magazine at that time too. Maybe that fact they had one song "Arcadian" about God's only Son skewed them as a Christian Metal band. Great riffs, killer strong vocals with great highs and good production. How this band fell off the edge of the world I'll never know but anyone I've introduced this band to who likes 80's metal loves this. Castle Donnington album is low budget, but nice to have their complete catalog on 1 CD.

PURGATORY - Purgatory EP/Tied To The Trax (1985/1986) USA

J.U.F. RECORDS
This legendary speed/thrash group PURGATORY, was formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984. In January of 1985, they entered Brittain Square Studios and recorded 4 songs - "Night Crawler Bitch", "Valley Of The Shadow Of Death", "Deep Into The Red", and "Purgatory (Shattered Vision)". The EP was released soon after, and sold roughly 1,000 copies.

Their first live gig, which would be in May at the Old Brooklyn Tavern. The show was a big success, and they began to get a lot of offers to play out. They eventually opened up for bands like Metal Church, Lizzy Borden, and Fates Warning -- as well as doing some headlining shows. In just a few short months, Purgatory was in all the local music press, as well as being one of the top draws on the local metal scene.
Visit the PURGATORY Myspace, myspace.com/clevelandpurgatory.
TRACKS:
1. Night Crawler Bitch
2. Valley Of the Shadow Of Death
3. Deep Into The Red
4. Purgatory (shattered vision)

AUBURN RECORDS
In the winter of 1985, Purgatory signed to Bill Peters and Auburn Records and began recording their debut LP "Tied To The Trax". The 9-song album was recorded at Suma Recording Studios and took several months to complete. New versions of the four songs from the EP were included, along with 5 new original tracks. All of the songs contained a strong mixture of speed, melody, and tempo changes -- something that gave Purgatory an identity of their own. Purgatory completed a licensing deal with the German based SPV/Steamhammer Records which would ensure worldwide exposure of the album. With the album completed, all that the guys could do was wait until its release. Everything seemed to be going smoothly, but what lay ahead would be the biggest challenge for the band to face yet.
Prior to the LP's release, Greg Perry decided to leave the band. His departure took place around March of '86, and he cited musical differences as his reason for leaving. Purgatory got a replacement, Ed Whittingler, for a short while, but that didn't work out. By this time, Jeff and Mark were changing the direction of the band to a bit more thrash/speed metal. Randy was not feeling the new direction, and thought that the band lacked what it once had with Greg Perry and him on dueling guitars. So, in May of '86, Randy also left the band due to musical differences. And now, with a new album on its way out, Purgatory was left without any guitarists.
The 3 remaining members frantically searched for new guitar players. They came out of the search with Frank Romano and Dave Felton, two upcoming guitarists from the Cleveland area. Shortly thereafter, Greg Perry worked out his differences and rejoined Purgatory. After encountering musical differences, Dave Felton left the band. Purgatory had survived a major obstacle, and their optimism about the release of the new album had returned.

The band played out often and got a great response from the album. They played all through '86 and '87, and then the guys started to drift apart. Jeff started to have musical differences with the band, and ended up leaving the band in 1988. Greg Perry also made his second and final exit in '88. Kenny, Mark, and Frank stuck together and recruited guitarist Tony Ross and vocalist Andy Boyer. The new lineup sent the bands sound back to the early days of Purgatory. They released an EP titled "Dr. Pain" in early 1989, and played a few live shows before finally disbanding for good.
Despite being together for 5 years, Purgatory seemed to have an even more short-lived career. The band seemed to have such a promising future, and had a unique style in the local Cleveland metal scene. Purgatory only recorded one full-length album, but it had an impact in metal for years to come.
Really, Must-Have!

WARLORD - and the Cannons of Destruction have begun... (1984) USA

METAL BLADE RECORDS
Amazing! The 1984 is the best period for the Us epic, just think to all the masterpieces released in this period, from bands like CITH UNGOL, MANILLA ROAD, OMEN, MANOWAR ecc..
Any comment for this album is superfluous, every riff, melody and solo molds that are genuine gems of epic metal with connotations of chivalry and magic. His compositional ability is undoubtedly excellent, very original and imaginative. From a purely technical is not excessive display of virtuosity that is still not suited to the genre, however, shows more than one occasion to be able to speed executions also pretty much always supported smooth and harmonious. The magnificence and the great historical importance of a disc like this, that has influenced many subsequent bands, a disc really hard to review for his immense musical value, not only epic in scope, but in all the metal scene.

METAL MASSACRE - Volume 2 (1982) USA

METAL BLADE RECORDS
The second Metal Massacre compilation didn't introduce a legendary band like Metallica (Metal Massacre, Vol. 1) or Slayer (Metal Massacre, Vol. 3), but it still unleashed a wave of impressive artists from the developing California metal scene.
The biggest names featured on Metal Massacre II are Armored Saint and Overkill, both of which are (more or less) active to this day. The compilation also introduced cult metal favorites Obsession, Savage Grace and Warlord. The rest of the artists featured here either had one-album careers (3rd Stage Alert, Trauma, Hyksos) or never released an album at all (Surgical Steel, Dietrich, Molten Leather, Aloha). Trauma, of course, was Cliff Burton's pre-Metallica band and Aloha (later Hawaii) featured Marty Friedman, pre-Megadeth.

It's not the game changer that Metal Massacre I was, but Metal Massacre II is still an important release in metal history. Between the bands that made it, and those that were never heard from again, Metal Massacre II is a great snapshot of the early 80's power and thrash metal scene that Metal Blade played such a large role in establishing

METAL MASSACRE - Volume 4 (1983) USA

METAL BLADE RECORDS
Oh yeah, this one's an overlooked gem alright. As with most various-artist compilations, there are low points.(Medieval's "Medieval" comes to mind.) However, if you'll look at the liner notes, you'll see that, aside from Lizzy Borden, the disc's strongest cuts come from Midwestern (Ilinois to be exact) bands. CASE IN POINT: Trouble's mind-numbingly brilliant "The Last Judgement." However, the true glory here lies in War Cry's magnificent "Forbidden Evil." I may be in the minority here, but this is one the heaviest things ever scorched to vinyl. How such an astonishingly foul breath of black wind could be concocted by such a young, unknown band is beyond science. Can't help but wonder what the hell ever happened to War Cry. Suffice to say, the War Cry track and the rare Trouble track are worth the price of the CD alone.

IRON ANGEL - Winds of War (1986) GER

STEAMHAMMER RECORDS
2004 Remastered by MSI Music label incluides 7 live bonus track from "HELLISH CROSSFIRE" Tour in 1985.
WINDS OF WAR was heavily criticized upon its release. However, anyone listening to the album nowadays can see how inappropriate this criticism was. It´s a lesson in metal and shows a natural progression to the sound portrayed on HELLISH CROSSFIRE, having tracks like METALSTORM, STRONGER THAN STEEL and SEA OF FLAMES as outstanding highlights. However, the changes in both the band´s sound and lyrics made the members start having different opinions about the band´s future. Some wanted to keep the HELLISH CROSSFIRE sound, while the others intended to change even more, adopting a more Glam / Hard Rock oriented style, so that they could reach the American market. Due to these huge differences, the band broke up shortly after the release of this second album. Jürgen R. Blackmore, the son of Ritchie Blackmore, was guest guitarist on "Winds of War". In 1990 he founded the band Superstition together with Dirk Schröder and Mike Matthes.
Peter Wittke and Gunter Moritz, who had temporary replaced Lohmann on Iron Angel's Germany tour with King Diamond in 1986, later founded Roots.

US METAL - Volume 8 (1993) USA

AMERICAN LEGEND RECORDS
Deep regarding who it has re-bootlegged in CD these masterpiece of US Heavy/Speed Metal. The US METAL' volumes is composed from 12 CD, therefore till volume 12.
...it would be beautiful to be able to insert them all the 12 volumes, so as to complete this interesting collection and to have the possibility to listen some extremely rare albums and good forgotten early Metal.

The CD begins with the MiniLP "Ready For Action"(Tracks:01/06) by US'BLITZKRIEG that I have already posted a review (click) here.
The second's Canadians ASSAULT with their sole release "Survival In The Street"(Tracks:07/14), amazing Speed Metal, the album gives a full-blown metal assault without being generic. It uses awesome riffs and killer drumming combined with great vocals.
The third group that follows is the ultra-obscure M.C. BLADE (remains unknown where and when they have been formed this us Melodic Metal group), their EP "Step Into The Light"(Tracks:15/18) almost impossible to find on original vinyl, the title-track is one of the best metalsongs(underrated) ever heard, some two minute acoustic guitarwork, before a majestic riff opens an overwhelming epic hymn. Carried by the sublime voice of Mark Carolans you feel like proudly singing your national anthem when it comes to the chorus.
Highly recommended, take this album when possible, it contains a greatest metal classics!

ASGARD - Imago Mundi (1993) ITA

WMMS RECORDS
Epic Metal with mystic fantasy lyrics. This sentence alone will create an image in your mind of MANILLA ROAD, CIRITH UNGOL or SLOUGH FEG.
ASGARD originally hail from Italy (Treviso - near Venecia) but now live in Germany.
They are totally ignored or overlooked by the mainstream metal media. But from the beginning: ASGARD released their first CD in 1991 on the touching WMMS label from Germany. It was called "Götterdämmerung" and was a great piece of Epic Mystic Prog Metal/Rock, from the very beginning they had a totally unique style that can not be compared with any other band. Some tracks are very long, maybe kind of "progressive" music, but always with amazing and chilling melodies. In 1992 "Esoteric Poem" was released, their second full-length. Also a very good one, but the whole album features only one track, so it is a little more difficult to get into it. The follow-up was called "Arkana" and came in the same year (1992). It is the darkest, most threating ASGARD album until today, real intense with fantastic tracks as for example the insane "Olaf Stonehand", the enchanting "A Gathering of Faries" or the fast and furious "Wulfstan". One year later, in 1993, the best ASGARD full-length "Imago Mundi"! I will not try to describe this piece of epic metal/rock, I am not able to find words that can express my feelings for this masterpiece! Great cover, fantastic magical lyrics, melodies just not from this world and unbelievable tracks as "Justice - Land of the Silver Drakkar", the tranquil "Virtue - Land of the eternal snows" or the crushing "Disharmony - Land of the Chasms" will take you on a journey you will never forget!!!
TRACKS:
01. Transmigration - On A Blow Of Immense (6:28)

THRUST - Fist Held High (1984) USA

METAL BLADE RECORDS
Super CULT, 80s heavy/power metal debut album from this Chicago area group.
A great record that got lost in the avalanche of great releases in that most Metal year, this one's due for rediscovery, being as it is one of the great last blasts of traditional Metal before the burgeoning Thrash and Glam movements killed off most of the lower league bands in their wake. Great chest-beating stuff which reminds a little of the likes of ANVIL, MANOWAR, EXCITER & ARMORED SAINT in places. It also includes a song called "Posers Will Die!", what are you waiting for?
TRACKS:
1.Fist Held High
2.Overdrive
3.Freedom Fighters
4.Metallic Attack
5.Heavier Than Hell
6.Thrasher
7.Torture Chamber
8.Posers Will Die!
9.Destructer

TAIST OF IRON - Resurrection (1984) USA

IRON RECORDS
Bootleg CD issue by Hot Metal Records circulating.
The style is a definite cross of JUDAS PRIEST "Screaming for vengance" mixed in with some CHASTAIN "Ruler of the wasteland" mixed in with a little TYRANT "Legions of the dead" and of course a little SABBATH and even a little VAN HALEN as evidenced on the guitar solo. The (female) vocalist has iron lungs and spits metal hell like a mix of Leather Leone, Bitch and Doro and the vocalist from BATTLEFIELD, EVERY SONG on here is a winner memorable and flowing over with pre metal might, "Bloody axe" "Victim child" "Cross of fire" all rule.As the dark entity looms over the transfixed victim on the album cover so shall you be victim to TAIST OF IRON!

1) Resurrection

DEATHRAGE - Self Conditioned, Self Limited (1988) ITA

METAL MASTER RECORDS
From the ashes of VIRUS in viale piave 9 (an old punk haunt) there emerged the two driving forces behind the birth of the group .
Milan 1986 Alex Vicini and Mauro Tonon (bass guitar and lead vocalist respectively) decided to put some flesh on the bones of their idea. Firstly with the name decided by Alex “DEATHRAGE” , which worked well and was immediately adopted without losing any time in trying to justify the choice and give it a meaning and then by looking for a drummer and lead guitar amongst friends . this proved successful only for the first with Roberto “JENA” Sambusida , whilst to find the latter required going outside their group of friends to Lorenzo Marconi. The band started its journey frequenting various music rooms.
It soon became apparent that Lorenzo’s guitar , not with standing his “virtuoso” was not powerful enough and therefore a new entry Davide Castelli came on the scene and the new sound was immediately “devastating” with a violent rhythmic .
The lyrics fluctuated between the social to anti-satanism and came almost entirely from the mind of JENA , translated into English by the all-knowing Alex .
The band went ahead with full sails and the moment of recording the first demotape arrived . divide left the group following incomprehension and disagreements over the musical level and he was immediately replaced by Massimo De Stefanis who added a touch of power with a less limpid rhythmic . The promiscuity of the musical influence of every member (tastes from Judas to Napalm Death via Motorhead ) led the group to coin a new genre “Tramp Metal”. Time flew and by 1988 DEATHRAGE signed by Metal Master (Discomagic) cut their first LP “Self Conditioned Self Limited “ under the technical care of A C Wild (Buldozer). In terms of concerts the band performed a number throughout northern Italy. In 1990 Mauro left his place in the band to Nico (Alex Nicolini) who with his tone gave a more death-like imprint on yhe 2nd LP “DOWN IN THE DEPTH OF SICKNESS” , but the links holding Mauro to the band proved too strong and his re-entry became necessary. And so it was!
The desire to reinvent themselves gave the necessary push to introduce a new instrument: the keyboard , behind which was Tito. The experiment was not the happiest and the group quickly returned to its roots.
The 2nd demotape , where a pure piece of Discharge style can be appreciated was the last chapter , and also if never openly declared , the end of the group was natural.
To date no one has has kept in touch…..
