SACRILEGE - Within The Prophecy/Behind The Realms Of Madness (2005) UK

Under One Flag/Children of the Revolution, Blackend Records
2 LPs on 1 CD: Within The Prophecy/Behind The Realms Of Madness
Offering a great lesson in British thrash metal history, Candlelight Records brings two classic albums back into the spotlight. Sacrilege's BEHIND THE REALMS OF MADNESS and WITHIN THE PROPHECY (originally released in 1985 and 1987 respectively) largely influenced the thrash and extreme metal movement in the U.K. during the late 1980s. Interestingly, Sacrilege was among the very few female-fronted thrash metal bands ever to exist. The band's music was raw, crusty, and brutal, with a veiled sense of melody. BEHIND spits punk-inspired streetwise venom, while WITHIN bulldozes the listener with thick riffs and refined compositions. Combined, the set is a massive slab of classic metal.

WAR CRY.US - Forbidden Evi (2006) USA

Best of/Compilation, S.I.N. Music
Playing music in the vein of early Black Sabbath, the bands sound was naturally rather doomy, and the group suitably dubbed themselves "War Cry". After finding vocalist Rich Rozek, the band begun to pen their own compositions. At this time, the NWOBHM movement was in full swing, and War Cry found large amounts of inspiration in other acts from that movement, such as the great Witchfinder General and Angel Witch. Their approach became even more doomy, as a result of listening to those Sabbath-based acts. I have to mention at this point that the Chicago scene really begun to develop into something special around 1983. Emerging power metal acts such as Witchslayer, Slauter Xstroyes, Hammeron, Infra Red and Paradoxx were complimented nicely by the aggression of Zoetrope, or the doom of the godly band Trouble. A totally killer scene for sure, and one that would only get better !
War Cry made the step up to playing live shows in 1983. After calling the local club Haymakers (an infamous club in Prospect Heights, Illinois), gigs became frequent and after a while, better offers were given to War Cry. At this time, War Cry were drawing in many people, and live shows often consisted of covers of Sabbath, Priest, Angel Witch and even Twisted Sister. They soon became a fave among many people involved in the Chicago metal scene. In mid-83, War Cry entered Open Reel Studios in Lynwood, Illinois to record the legendary "Trilogy Of Terror" demo. The recording cost around 500 dollars, and contained four tracks; "The Executoner's March (Intro)", "The Executioner", "Wicked Warlock" and "Forbidden Evil". Needless to say, for the rather expensive price of 500 dollars, the tape was well worth it ! To this day, that demo remains one of the heaviest recordings ever to hit the metal scene, and for many is a totally cult piece of metal ! The demo never had a cover, and although War Cry had no clue how to promote it at the time, copies of it rapidly spread through the tape trading network, and War Cry achieved fame in the metal underground.
By now, War Cry were opening all the big shows, such as Joe Perry Project and Mountain. Nobody was jealous however, as the Chicago scene (like many early scenes) had great camaraderie. As expected, the oppurtunity to appear on vinyl came calling, in the form of Brian Slagel's Metal Blade Records. His prestigious Metal Massacre compilation series featured many promising metal acts, and had helped to launch the careers of Metallica, Ratt and Slayer, among many others. By now, three Metal Massacre's had been released, and War Cry were offered the chance to appear on the fourth, aptly titled Metal Massacre 4. Metal Blade chose the song "Forbidden Evil" from the "Trilogy Of Terror" demo, to appear on the compilation, so War Cry recorded the track specially at Pierced Arrow Studios, in Evansten, a suburb of Chicago. Metal Massacre 4 featured War Cry's fellow Chicago acts Trouble, Witchslayer, Zoetrope and Thrust (Ron Cooke's band). It also included Sceptre, who would go on to become Agent Steel. Apart from Trouble, none of the acts would go on to achieve any major success, although Lizzy Borden and thrash act Abattior both recorded albums (Abattior's was quite good actually, though Lizzy Borden just suck). Despite this, Metal Massacre 4 is really one of the more consistent Massacre discs overall.

(ARTWORK BY MATT LOMBARD)
War Cry recieved good response, and the disc helped them become noticed on the international scene. Future thrash act Forbidden Evil even took their name from the War Cry song (although the "Evil" bit was later dropped, and the band became known as just "Forbidden"). Despite this success, drummer Joe Iaccino had quit War Cry, and the search was on for another drummer. Bill Schmidt, a drummer who had been jamming alone in his basement with no previous experience, was eventually chosen (He had originally auditioned for War Cry the year before, but did not get the gig due to Speckmann being un-impressed with Schmidt's style). Schmidt played his one and only gig with War Cry at the infamous club Haymakers, before recieving marching orders due to an altercation with Marty Fitzgerald. It was clear he was a rather lively personality (from www.master-speckmetal.com).

SAINT VITUS - Saint Vitus/Hallow's Victim [Limited Collector's edition] (200?) USA

Promo/Bootleg, S.S.T. Records
Saint Vitus (1984):
Recorded at Total Access, Redondo Beach, California.
In 1979, the vocalist Scott Reagers, guitarist Dave Chandler, bassist Mark Adams and drummer Armando Acosta from Los Angeles got together to form a band called TYRANT. Soon after this they decided to change their name to SAINT VITUS which is, a medieval boy saint and patron for the dancers and young dogs, and a song: "Saint Vitus Dance" from the doom/rock gods BLACK SABBATH (only Ozzy-era). Despite the fact, that they where friends with a lot of southern California hardcorebands, they didn't take that music as their main influence. Also the original vitus-sound had a slight hardcore feel, it was much more based on 70s style doom rock played by bands such as BLACK SABBATH or PENTAGRAM. extreme slow drumming, simple, but highly effective power chords and weird solos from guitarist chandler seemed to be the best way to musically support their dark and gloomy lyrics. After playing a few shows in the near surrounding, SAINT VITUS released their mind-blowing, self-titled debut on sst records. the label was founded by BLACK FLAG guitar player and personal friend Greg Ginn. "Saint Vitus" contained classics like the powerful "Saint Vitus", the theatrical "White Magic / Black Magic" and the atmospheric anthem "Burial at Sea".
Hallow's Victim (1985):
Contrary to what most first-time listeners might expect based on the band's reputation as American doom pioneers, Saint Vitus were hardly all about indolence and sloth when it came to their songwriting. In reality, most every one of their albums contained a few fast-paced numbers, geared to getting their fans' blood pumping and heads banging, but 1985's sophomore effort, Hallow's Victim, was entirely off the charts in this regard. Stacking high-energy metal anthems pretty much from start to finish, it's almost as if the bandmembers were intentionally thumbing their noses at the dominant thrash metal craze of the period with this album, while seeking to prove that they weren't just a bunch of long-in-the-tooth SoCal hippies in the bargain. Nothing could have been further from the truth, obviously, as Hallow's Victim opened with the hard-driving, oft-covered classic "War Is Our Destiny," broke into an all-out gallop for the aptly named "White Stallions," and then rarely stopped for breath during ensuing heavy metal juggernauts like "The Sadist" and the pummeling title track, which, for all intents and purposes, could well be considered straight-up hardcore, and was probably influenced by Vitus' labelmates at SST. The band finally relented from its frantic stride to establish a gothic mid-paced groove on "Just Friends (Empty Love)" -- very reminiscent of cross-country rivals Pentagram -- and then settled down into some sluggish doom, at last, for the epic "Mystic Lady" and sardonic album closer, "Prayer for the (M)asses," although even this generally sludgy tandem frequently launched into a good trot before too long. In the end, Hallow's Victim is an eye-opening experience for those who would typecast Saint Vitus as a strictly doom-dependent enterprise, and its first-rate songs throughout offer proof positive of the band's formidable creative abilities -- regardless of tempo. Yes, doom purists may point out, correctly, that this album is unrepresentative of both the genre and Saint Vitus' body of work in general, but who would dare cast the first stone, considering that even Black Sabbath wrote speedy songs like "Paranoid" and "Never Say Die" -- remember? (by Eduardo Rivadavia).

SAINT VITUS - Born Too Late (1986) USA

Full-length, S.S.T.
These days there are truck loads of bands using the old Sabbath formula, but no band does it as well as 80's indie doom masters St.Vitus. Born Too Late is Saint Vitus' first album to feature Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Metal, like most male dominated music, tends to reflect an alpha male attitude, lots of macho agression, it reflects the way men are conditioned to think, value and behave in western capitalist culture (or reflects the sympotoms and outcomes of a culture that values winning, high gloss, and greed above all else) Vitus breaks from the stereotype, their sound is very heavy, masculine, creepy and desparate-yet there are vast differences between masculine and macho, desparate and depraived. These songs are S-L-O-W dirges that deal with addiction, depression, and loss. War Starter deals with mans penchant for competition (war) cold apathy for lives lost and humanity itself, and the foolish reliance on so called leaders and groups. The reoccurring theme of this album (and most Vitus albums) seems to be isolation. Not belonging. The opening song, the title track, starts out "Every time I'm on the street, people laugh and point at me,they talk about my length of hair and the out of date clothes I wear"-this held more relavance in the 80's, but it still rings true today.Vocalist Wino said it was a song for all the people (metal fans) who stayed heavy-remember, back in the 80's,metal sold out, went the way of tight pants and hair-do bands playing top-40 'party' metal. The nineties saw metal sell out to funk, alternative (whatever thats supposed to mean) and now hip hop/rap, so it does'nt surprise me to see this album, this band, talked about in reverential tones among todays underground metal fans.
Considered a 'high' (bong) water mark among the 11 Vitus albums/ep's,Born Too Late is the poster child for todays stoner/doom metal scene.

SAINT VITUS - Mournful Cries (1988) USA

Full-length, S.S.T.
The opener "The Creeps" starts with a descending-chord riff that sounds more like an old punk style riff than lumbering doom, then settles into a mid-paced tempo. Note the maracas (!) in the background. The song then leads right into the lumbering "Dragon Time", a tale about the most popular of mythical medieval creatures, the Dragon. Check out guitarist Dave Chandler's "When A Dragon Is This Old...It knows only pain" spoken word in the intro and his "It's Dragon Time!" on the outro. His growls lend the song a weird authenticity. "Shooting Gallery" seems to be about the tragedy of heroin use, with a truly haunting slow riff that breaks into a great "wall of guitar" midway through. "Bitter Truth", written by vocalist/second guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich, is the standout track of the LP, with it's beautiful acoustic guitar intro(A Vitus first!) "The Troll", a tale of one man's despair against what mankind has become and a desire to stay cut off from it, is lyrically dynamic, and features a great feedback-solo from Dave. The album closer, "Looking Glass", leaves the listener with the immrotally uplifting words, "Cold gray haze will never stay/Don't ever let 'em take your strength away." Words to live by. The only problem with the LP is it's production sound, which makes the guitars seem very compressed and the drums hollow. It make have something to do with the fact that the album was recorded in 3 days, but the production here seems much thinner than on "Born Too Late". And the digital sound on the CD version only accentuates the thinness of the mix. Also, the CD is only 33 minutes long. While I understand the time limitations of the LP format, SST Records could have added some extra material(if there was any) to the Cassette and CD. Regardless, a true slab of Doom that will not be bettered by any other band! EPIC DOOM!!

SAINT VITUS - V (1989/2004) USA

HELLHOUND RECORDS / SOUTHERN LORD
Saint Vitus are one of the best and most legendary of traditional doom metal bands. But don't let the term doom metal stop you from listening to them: actually they sound like Black Sabbath mixed with Hippy/Stoner Rock, that is, mostly 70's heavy metal with Southern Rock influence. Wino is great in your last St. Vitus studio album as on all his work, my favorite songs is Living Backwards and I Bleed Black, like me much also When Emotion Dies. The album's title is a reference to the Roman numeral five, not the letter "V" from the English alphabet.

SAINT VITUS - C.O.D. (1992) USA

HELLHOUND RECORDS
C.O.D. aka Children of Doom is the penultimate album by Saint Vitus. The album was released in 1992 on Hellhound Records. This is the only album to feature former Count Raven vocalist Christian Lindersson.
This album is different than some of the old Saint Vitus stuff with Wino or Scott Reagers. It isn't quite as slow, and is heavier than hell.
The band broke up shortly after this album but reformed with original singer Scott Reagers for their final album, Die Healing (1995).

SAINT VITUS - Die Healing (1995) USA

HELLHOUND RECORDS
Die Healing is the seventh and final album by American doom metal pioneers Saint Vitus.
The album starts with a monster fucking heavy riff, IT'S A DARK WOOORLD. This is what doom is about, ladies and gentlemen. It was released in 1995 by Hellhound Records. ..this album re-introduces their original vocalist, Scott Reagers,& he never sounded better! Nothing against Wino(whom is a doom god),but in my opinion Scott fits Vitus like no other.

Formed from the ashes of the band Blitzkrieg in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, in 1981, the original line-up of Satan comprised Trevor Robinson (vocals), Russ Tippins (guitar), Steve Ramsey (b. 8 July 1964, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; guitar), Graeme English (b. 4 November 1963, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; bass) and Andy Reed (drums). In 1981 the band recorded two tracks for a compilation, Roxcalibur, and a self-financed single entitled "Kiss Of Death"/"Heads Will Roll". Soon after its release vocalist Robinson and Reed left the band to be replaced by Ian Swift and Ian McCormick respectively. This band recorded with Ian Swift (voice) the seven-track demo Into The Fire, but by mid-1983 the classic line-up of Satan had been completed with the recruitment of Brian Ross (vocals) and Sean Taylor (drums).
