New discovery and possibly the best 'unknown super-rarity' I've come across so far. "Mysterier" ("Mysteries") is a deadringer for BLACK SABBATH's "Heaven and Hell" and therefore it is also a superb, ultra-heavy epic whose lack of originality feels totally irrelevant. The fact that B-side "Travellin'" sounds like warmed over STATUS QUO matters little when you can play the A-side over and over again while oogling the ultra-cult cover art without ever getting tired of that pounding lead riff. Let's pretend that 2nd AOR 7" from '86 never happened.

SACRED ALIEN - Spiritual Planet EP (1981) UK

Manchester Glam influenced NWOBHM band SACRED ALIEN was formed in 1980 by Sean Canning and Martin Ainscow. Having released a couple of independent singles, 1981's 'Spiritual Planet' and 1982's 'Eternal Flame', SACRED ALIEN's third effort, 'Legends', was a 1983 split single released on Steve Heighway's Heighway Robbery Records with fellow Glam outfit VIRGIN - who contributed the track 'Sitting In The Front Row'. "Legends" is included here as a bonus track for you completests. Drummer Darren Wilcock and bassist Paul Davies quit in mid 1983 to pursue more Metal minded music, with Wilcock later joining KLAN. After recruiting bassist John Murney and drummer Mark Robbo SACRED ALIEN finally split in late 1983 and Canning formed WHITE TRASH.

Demo con materiali inediti del loro repertorio con materiale fortemente influenzato dallo stile di JIMI HENDRIX. La band nel 1985 cambierà bassista e monicker chiamandosi TEMPEST. Nel 1986 ritorneranno a SMOKIN ROADIE, in quell' anno il trio suonerà anche negli Stati Uniti per poi ritornare in Inghilterra e registrare il loro unico e inesistente full-lenght chiamato "Overnight Stay", l' album non verrà stampato e rilasciato fino al 1989 e solo per una ristrettissima distribuzione per il mercato giapponese. Non conosco assolutamente niente sull' esistenza di questo LP, ma posso supporre che su questa loro ultima testimonianza (ascoltabile) c'è sicuramente una bozza di quello che poi sarebbe divenuto un album.

Originally on vinyl only. Released on CD in 1990. Formed in Nashville (Tennessee) in 1987. INTRUDER originally released Live To Die in 1987 on Azra/Ironworks. There is a lot of history leading up to this great album. Drummer/Lyricist John Pieroni was a founding member before INTRUDER even had a name. It began as a trio, in 1984, with Dave Hackley on bass and Dave Louden on guitar and vocals. This lineup was a basement band that played Black Sabbath covers and the like. No gigs were performed and they didn’t really care to name the project. When the band was ready to get out of the basement and start playing live gigs, they used the name Avatar ‘for about 2 minutes. Too many other groups went by the same tag, so they dropped it. Dave Louden wanted to concentrate on vocals, so he brought in his friend, Arthur Vinett, to play guitar. With Arthur joining John, the true nucleus of INTRUDER was born. Soon thereafter, Louden was out completely and Ronny CLINE stepped in as vocalist. This quartet played lots of shows and went by the name TRANSGRESSER (they spelled it with the “-er” suffix on purpose). Playing a mix of originals and cover songs such as Twisted Sister’s “Under the Blade” and Savatage’s “I Believe” they soon attracted a loyal following. The rotating bass player slot started once Dave Hackley was out of the picture and replaced by Garry Todd. This lineup continued to play numerous shows in the South. Eventually, Jimmy Hamilton replaced Ronny CLINE and this lineup recorded two demos. The first demo was recorded on an ½ inch 8 track machine and included early versions of Cover Up and Live to Die. The second demo, recorded in a “real” 24 track studio, was sent to Dave Richards, who immediately fell in love with the band and signed them to Azra/Iron Works. After the demos were recorded, John Downey, a veteran of the Nashville Music scene, took over bass duties for a very short time. Todd Nelson, who remained in the band for all four releases, quickly replaced him. With the lineup finally secure and intact, the quartet began to record the Live To Die album. It was during the recordings that they finally chose the moniker INTRUDER.
The Live To Die sessions took place over a long period of time. It was recorded at TREASURE ISLE, a top-notch studio in Nashville, where major country music stars recorded their albums. It took so long to record because they could only get studio time late at night and on weekends. The upside of this was that they were able to record on first-rate equipment. In fact, Live To Die was one of the first all digital recordings in the Metal world. Tom Harding was the perfect producer for the job and continued to work closely with the band on the next two releases. When Live To Die came out, it largely went unnoticed. The album sold some copies in the U.S., Europe and a fair amount in Japan, but nothing too major. INTRUDER always received a fair amount of press in Europe but perhaps not being a part of the underground tape trading market of the time hurt the band. The TRANSGRESSER demos were not circulated on trade lists, therefore, the LP was not as anticipated as it could have been. The lack of sales and knowledge of the albums’ existence was certainly no fault of the label. Azra put out more Live To Die promotional items than imaginable. It’s truly unbelievable how many Live To Die collectibles there are. Everything from stickers to pins to picture discs to a saw blade CD to many different shaped 7 inches: blob, star, heart, monster picture disc, square, octagon and the list goes on and on.

S.A. SLAYER - Prepare To Die MLP (1983) USA

RAINFOREST RECORDS
1983 was the year of the Slayers! One that would earn the key to the world, one from the UK that would be swallowed by the planet after an ep on Cavalier Records, and this quintet from San Antonio, Texas. Nationalities of traditional, power, light thrash, and euro-sound act in a salad bowl effect in these five tracks, all fighting to be heard and not really melting into one another. Everything about this EP rules except for the production. Production is very weak, it has a lot of static, but everything else i pretty good.

S.A. Slayer was originally known just as Slayer, but since there was another Slayer (US) at that time and they had already put out an album, they threatened the San Antonio Slayer with a lawsuit, and so they had to put the S.A. before their name. The band has been long disbanded, and the members have scattered to many different bands (Steve Cooper joined Juggernaut, Ron Jarzombek is in Watchtower and Spastic Ink, Don Van Stavern was in the bands Riot and Pitbull Daycare, and drummer Dave McClain had been in both Machine Head (US) and Sacred Reich.
This MLP was re-released, unofficially, together with "Go For The Throat" on cd by Unisound Records, on February 23, 2004. Reissued officially by the band in 2007.

Legendary glam rockers who originated in Finland and took the Sunset Strip scene by storm with this, their sixth album overall and first on a major worldwide label. Sadly it was the last album for drummer Razzle, who was famously killed in a car crash in which Motley Crue's Vince Neil was driving. By 1985 the Rocks had split, but they came back a few years ago to tour and record again. This album showcases a band that were true pioneers of LA hard rock, inspiring the likes of LA Guns and GNR. Highly recommended!

HALLOWEEN - Don't Metal With Evil (1984) USA

From Detroit, (Michigan), formed in 1984 and in the same year was released their first full-length "Don't Metal With Evil". Re-released by Killer Metal Records in 2008 with four (live) bonus tracks.
This is solid Speed/Heavy metal with cheesy vocals and lyrics, and it delivers just about how you'd expect it to. Plus it has a lot of solos, and they're not Kerry King style either (which can only be a good thing). The strong point of the album is really the songwriting, and when you get down to it, that is at least 90% of what determines an album's quality.

The songs are pretty much the 80s style of classic metal, some more uptempo than others. Busted!!! is a classic speed metal wrecker, as is Trick or Treat, and then we have a few more anthemic midpaced numbers like the title track - "it might be too late now, can you hear the bell?" and also the occasionally thrashier "What a Nice Place". "Justice for All" is the ballad but it gets heavier... and then there's also "She's a Teaser" - with a title you expect some kind of disaster, but it turns out to be a nice midpaced banger... she's a teaser (she keeps you up all night!) We close with another dose of blazing fury in To Fight the Beast, with a solo that goes on forever - oh yeah most songs have those too, including the random triplet-based Richie Blackmore solo for about a second and a half in The Wicked Witch.
Plain and simple kids, this is just heavy fucking metal. No modern atrocities to be found here... crank this one up... or die!!!

HEAVY PETTIN - Rock Ain't Dead (1985) UK

The pride of Glasgow, 1985's "Rock Ain't Dead" was the second album from Heavy Pettin', a melodic hard rock band from Scotland that was loosely associated with the important 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene. Rock ain't Dead initially drew some criticism from fans who thought the band softened their sound, but Heavy Pettin' was always closer to Def Leppard than Iron Maiden. Criticism aside, Rock ain't Dead is a fantastic slab of anthemic arena rock, full of rousing choruses, powerful guitar solos, and the kind of dramatic keyboards you'd only find on a mid 80's rock album. It's very similar to what Def Leppard was doing at the time (circa High and Dry and Pyromania), but there are also similarities to White Sister, Y&T, Autograph, and heavier Night Ranger. It may not win over serious metalheads, but Rock ain't Dead is the kind of album that 80's rock fans should definitely seek out. Majestic reissued Rock ain't Dead in 2003, and in addition to the digitally remastered sound, the new version includes two bonus tracks - Crazy and City Girl. Both are studio tracks that fit the overall sound of the album.

Originally started as typical Teutonic thrash in the vein of, say, Kreator and Destruction, Holy Moses evolved into probably only (and definitely - first) deathmetal band with female singer (Sabina Classen, now in Temple of The Absurd). Well-executed old school death/thrash it is, with some hardcore overtones and GODLY sound (courtesy of Andy Classen, guitar player and producer). Well worth your money.

Of course it's hard to equal an album as good as the brilliant 'The New Machine Of Liechtenstein'. Holy Moses still yet has to do that nowadays and that means that also 'World Chaos' doesn't quite match up it's near perfect predecessor. World Chaos' is far from being Holy Moses' finest hour. The punky attitude is taken a little too far on this album. Of course, not every album can be equally good, but Uli Kusch, who left after this album, could have at least gotten a better farewell than this one. The title track alone is worth the price you pay for the album.

HOLY MOSES - The New Machine of Liechtenstein (1989) GER

This is an Excellent Album! I have known this great group thanks to the "Panic" videoclip.
HOLY MOSES was one of the very few 80s metal bands to feature a female vocalist, and Sabina Classen really pulls it off. Their first two albums are excellent as well, but this is the one that really does it for me. The music is a little more experimental, whereas the first two were more straightforward thrash. I also prefer the vocals on this album to any of their albums made before or after this, she still sings with a distinctive growl, but with a little less of that "I just drank a cup of cancer" sound. I'm not really to adept at writing in-depth reviews, but take my word that this is a worthy purchase for anyone interested in older thrash.
This remastered album has been re-remastered in 2007 and includes 2 live bonus tracks which have been recorded since their reunion in 2001 which are "SSP" (recorded live in Bad Salzungen/Kallewerk on May 14, 2005 in Germany at Wacken Roadshow) and "Lost In The Maze" (recorded live at Rock Harz Festival Osterode on July 9, 2005).

Holy Moses was officially formed in Aachen, Germany in 1980 with Jochen Funders on guitars and vocals, Ramon Bruessler on bass, and drummer Peter Vordenstein. They played their first live show in the town of Stolberg, where they began causing a significant buzz in the heavy metal community for their incredibly heavy, fast, and tight style and various other actions of the band's fanclub. However, this lineup was very short lived, and only lasted about a year, after the band played their first anniversary show by opening for Venom.
A new guitarist was soon found, in Andy Classen, formerly of the band Disaster. A vocalist named Iggy was soon found as well. Iggy was soon fired from the band due to drug problems and musical differences with the band. Andy soon came up with the idea to bring in his girlfriend at the time, Sabina Hertz for the vocals. Originally, Sabina does not want the job and singing in a very throaty and almost demonic sounding style of singing to make sure she does not get in the band. This had an inversive effect, and Ramon (the band's main songwriter at the time) was extremely pleased with the performance of Sabina, and the only permanent member of the band who has appeared on every album to this day finally joins. The band then plays their first shows with Sabina in November of 1981.
Some more lineup changes came after this (including Sabina's brother singing with the band for a few weeks after she temporarily left but then returned), and it also became more progressive and technical ability with heightened musicianship from Classen. With the lineup of Ramon on bass, Sabina on vocals, Andy on guitars, and new drummer Herbert Dreger, the band records their first album "Queen of Siam" produced by Ralph Hubert of Mekong Delta, the album stands out among its contemporaries for its extremely heavy and tight musicianship and technicality. However, the lineup does not last. Due to a lack of commitment for the band, Dreger is fired and replaced by a then nineteen year old Uli Kusch (later of Helloween) on drums.After that, Ramon, the one original member left in Holy Moses leaves the band to pursue his academic carrier. It is now fully managed by Sabina, and all songs are written by Andy and Sabina, who is married to the guitarist and becomes Sabina Classen (the name she uses to this day).
