CYNIC - Suicide 7" (1983) UK

Despite being one of the most impressive NWoBHM band in terms of heaviness and straightforward compositions, Cynic remains quite unknown and obscure to this day, probably due to the fact that the band's classic 1983 "Suicide" 7" single was their only commercially available legacy (now a very rare and costly piece) . However this single can easily compare with the best from the movement like HOLLOW GROUND or JJ’s POWERHOUSE. The band did also record several demos through the years and have reconvened recently to record a full length album due for release this year.

REINCARNATE - 1983 Demo (1983) UK

This is the only other recording from Stoke band Reincarnate, whose lone single, 1982's "Take It Or Leave It" we posted last time. This is the four song, cassette only "1983 Demo", following which the band split.
Bassist/Vocalist Paul "Frazza" Farrington went on to join HARRIER as keyboard player, recording the "Out On The Street" EP in 1984. Farrington would later join the reformed DEMON in 2002 and appear on the "Better The Devil You Know" album of 2005.

GROUND ATTACK - The Lost Tapes (1979) UK

PRIVATE PRESS

DIE LAUGHING - You Got The Power 7" (1980) UK

Die Laughing were a short lived NWOBHM trio from Sussex who recorded this one rare single in 1980. The "You Got The Power" 45 was released on Ocean Records in an eye catching comic style sleeve, and came with a free badge & poster. Very '70s influenced hard rock with interesting arrangements were the bands hallmarks, but it's value nowadays probably has more to do with it's rarity. Still, a nice "borderline NWOBHM" listen all said.

RUNESTAFF - Runestaff Demo (1982) UK

Back to Blighty next for the 1982 Demo by Runestaff. RUNESTAFF began life in Ipswich in 1980 as an all male quintet in the Tolkien inspired Prog Rock mould. Their first recorded product would be this three track 1982 demo cassette recorded at Hillside Sound Studios in Ipswich.
Dogged by line-up shuffles the band added vocalist Joanna Symes when guitarist/vocalist Andy Page departed. However, Page soon returned, inspired by the possibilities opened up by the new singer, concentrating solely on guitar. The band spent the next couple of years building up a strong live following with constant gigging and the odd decent support slot, gradually adding a Harder edge to their Proggy sound. The Wolverhampton based Heavy Metal Records issued a self-titled album in 1985. They followed this with two 7" singles, "Road To Ruin", and "Do It!" on Heavy Metal subsidiary FM/Revolver Records later that same year. Tragically, keyboard player Kaust Rakhit died of Thalasemia in mid 1985 and was replaced by Barry Godfrey. Depressed by the death of his friend, Page quit once more in 1986. A planned second album was forestalled as vocalist Joanne Syme then suffered a serious throat problem. With their momentum stalled by Syme's illness the band gradually dissolved in late '86.

CHALLENGER - So Sure Of Yourself 7" (1981) UK

Challenger, a Yorkshire based five piece NWOBHM band with a strong early '70's vibe. They released only this one record, the 1981 "So Sure Of Yourself" 45 on C.M.C. Records. Flipside, "Out To Kill" is probably the stronger of the two tracks, reminding me somewhat of QUARTZ.Highly prized nowadays by NWOBHM collectors, but at the time of it's original release sales struggled, and disspirited, the band went their separate ways.

EXPOZER - Exposed At Last EP (1980) UK

Expozer were a five piece NWOBHM band who were formed in Stoke On Trent in 1979. They debuted with the "Exposed At Last" 7" on Hit Hard Records in 1980. First track "Rock Japan" is a groove-laden and riff-based, all-out NWOBHM affair that sounds much like cranked up Boogie with a rough edge and somewhat contrasting, melodic-chants. This energetic upbeat number scores high in terms of all round impact, accessibility and structure, the latter which is highlighted by it's knack for melody and measure. "On My Knees" is a fast-paced number, less melodic and Bluesy rooted with rough style vocals and traces of early JAGUAR. Highly recommended.
The band got exposed on a larger scale through their contribution to the '81 Heavy Metal Records "Heavy Metal Heroes" compilation LP contributing the very same version of "Rock Japan", that appeared on the A-side of the 2-tracker. The single was later repressed as this EP which added two more untitled tracks. This four song version was only available for sale at their gigs. The band went their separate ways in 1982, with guitarist Tim Blackwood going on to form LE GRIFFE.

BATTLEAXE - BBC Session (1983) UK

Sunderland Metal band BATTLEAXE suffered from their undoubted musical merits being somewhat marred by an appalling debut album cover. The band first came to prominence with the 'Burn This Town' single in 1982 on the local Guardian Records label, and the B Side, 'Battleaxe', also appeared on the Guardian compilation album 'Roxcalibur'.The group was amongst the first signings to the Music For Nations label, with the London based concern releasing the band's debut album, 'Burn This Town', which featured the aforementioned offending artwork. At the time of the debut's release, the band were summoned to the BBC to record a four song session for Tommy Vance's BBC Radio 1 Friday Rock Show.

V/A - METAL PLATED (1983) UK

EBONY RECORDS
We are pleased to bring you another of the great Ebony Records compilation albums. Ebony Records was one of the classic minor-league labels of the NWOBHM time, focusing on up-and-coming mid-eighties bands mostly from the UK, though a few Euro bands crept in as well. Similar to labels such as Metal Blade, Ebony started out releasing compilations of unsigned acts, a few of which went on to record albums with the label. This particular album is "Metal Plated" from 1983, features eight bands in all, including four from the UK: BADGER, COMA, DOUBLE AGENT, STALLION, three from France: DEMON EYES, BLASPHEME, VULCAIN, and from Sweden, STEEL WINGS.

BATTLEAXE : Burn This Town 7" (1982) UK

Sunderland Metal band BATTLEAXE suffered from their undoubted musical merits being somewhat marred by an appalling debut album cover. The band first came to prominence with this little gem, the 'Burn This Town' single in 1982 on the local Guardian Records label, and the B Side, 'Battleaxe', also appeared on the Guardian compilation album 'Roxcalibur'. The group was amongst the first signings to the Music For Nations label, with the London based concern releasing the band's debut album, 'Burn This Town', which featured the aforementioned offending artwork. BATTLEAXE stuck around with MFN for a follow-up release, 1984's 'Power From The Universe', which appeared a year later, seeing drummer Ian Thompson superseded by Ian McCormack. Thompson went on to DARK HEART. At their peak BATTLEAXE toured Britain opening for SAXON and although a third album, 'Mean Machine', was recorded in 1987, it never saw the light of day. Tracks from the shelved album finally surfaced as the "Nightmare Zone" EP a few years ago.

MAYHEM - Bloodrush 7" (UK-1984)

Merseyside New Wave Of British Heavy Metal act MAYHEM who debuted on the Riot City label in 1982 with the punk influenced 4 song "Gentle Murder" EP. After toning down the punky element of their sound, they released this little cracker, the "Bloodrush" 7" single on the Vigilante label in 1984. A 1985 rerelease as a 12" EP on the same label added an extra song, " I Defy (Part 1)", and different cover artwork. Great TRIARCHY-esque intro, followed by a raw sounding but still tuneful midpaced verse and a throaty insistent chorus, this is brilliant stuff!

PERSIAN RISK - Ridin' High 7" (1983) UK

NEAT RECORDS
A Cardiff based Heavy Metal band with a reputation for delivering melodic quality songs. PERSIAN RISK was formed in 1979 by ex-ROCKTOPUS guitarist Phil Campbell, a musician who had previously plied his trade from the age of 13 as a drummer backing strippers! PERSIAN RISK's first line-up comprised of Campbell, guitarist Dave Bell, vocalist Jon Deverill, bassist Nick Hughes and drummer Razz. Deverill left to join the higher profiled TYGERS OF PAN TANG in 1981, necessitating the recruitment of former LEADING STAR vocalist Carl Sentance. SPHINX guitarist Graham Bath was added in late 1983 at the same juncture as Razz was replaced. Razz was superseded by erstwhile LONE STAR, WILD HORSES drummer Dixie Lee and the band contributed a track to the 'Heavy Metal Heroes Volume 2' compilation album. Campbell left to enter the big league by joining MOTÖRHEAD in 1984 and this move gained PERSIAN RISK the valuable British support slot to MOTÖRHEAD later the same year. The group added ex-SHY and CHINATOWN drummer Steve Hopgood and ex-MAX HAVOC band, TYRANT and WRATHCHILD guitarist Phil Vokins in late 1984 although by 1986 Hughes had fled for pastures new in IDOL RICH and Bath had left the fold too. Sentance also departed and would lend guest lead vocals to the debut TREDEGAR album in 1986. Sentance would also front TOKYO BLADE for their 1986 European tour. He was briefly replaced by ex-SATAN snd BLIND FURY vocalist Lou Taylor, but this effectively tolled the death knell for the band. By the time the 'Rise Up' album was released PERSIAN RISK had split up. Taylor created TOUR DE FORCE. Whilst Phil Campbell travelled the world in MOTÖRHEAD Steve Hopgood was to journey through many acts. The drummer formed a union with former McCOY vocalist Nikki Brooks, ex DUCHESS guitarist Dave Kilminster and ex-AIRRACE and TRAITOR bassist John Alexander in a new act titled WILD in early 1987. The drummer later turned up in BATTLEZONE, JAGGED EDGE and KILLERS. Carl Sentance journeyed to America to join a band put together by BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler suitably billed the GEEZER BUTLER BAND before touring as a temporary vocalist in TOKYO BLADE. Sentance was to later join MONROE, based in Germany, prior to a return to Wales and a stint with TOKIO ROSE. Travelling to America next, the singer formed GHOST with the LONE STAR, UFO and WAYSTED credited guitarist PAUL CHAPMAN. The singer actually reformed PERSIAN RISK in Florida with American guitarist Mark Lanoue and drumming compatriot Fred Wendal where the band gigged until their demise in 1993. Sentance then fronted Atlanta act PSYCHO CIRCUS until 1995.

DISTRAINERS - Japanned EP (1980) UK

Distrainers formed in Leicester UK in 1977 as a three piece. The original line up was Dave Roe (Guitar, Vocals), Phil Hammond (Bass & Vocals) and Steve Taylor (Drums, Vocals). The band at this time were very influenced by the punk movement that was going on around them. Dave left the band in 1978 and a replacement Guitarist in the shape of Pete Bambury was brought in. The band had now started to move away from the punkier side of things and by the time they released the single “Say Goodbye", in 1979 they were being touted as a NWOBHM band. The band gigged extensively during 1978/79 and built up a reasonable following throughout the UK. In addition to their headline gigs, there were a number of support appearances including WITCHFYNDE, WAYNE COUNTY & THE ELECTRIC CHAIRS, LIGHTNING RAIDERS and SAMSON. Around this time, there were also regular appearances at The USAF base at Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire where they appeared along with the likes of URCHIN, CHEVY, and SLEDGEHAMMER. As the bands sound developed a heavier feel they felt that the name they had chosen was a hindrance (sounding too “new wave”), so the decision was taken to change the name to ALIEN and expand to a four piece at the same time. ALIEN continued for a number of years although Steve Taylor left in 1981 to join Northampton NWOBHMers SOLDIER. An EP of material recorded in 1980 entitled "Japanned", was released in 2006 on the Headless Corpse label, as a result of the positive feedback the EP generated, Phil Hammond and Steve Taylor decided to resurrect the Distrainers, but Phil Hammond left to join Leicester band Burn. With new personnel on board Distrainers are currently putting together an album called "England's Green Unpleasant Land".
